Carpentry* students learn hands-on new construction skills. They build a house to scale in order to learn framing, drywall, rough and fine finishing, siding, shingled roofing, and door and window installation. Students construct a full size deck and staircase. Training includes blueprint reading, safety practices, and trade mathematics. The carpentry program is a two year course for juniors and seniors. The junior year consists of classroom, and hands on work. They will assist in building the carpentry house, and then enhance their skills by building utility buildings along with other small projects. The senior class will build a house from the ground up to practice the skills and competencies they have attained in this class. The house is sold at the end of the year, and all proceeds go back into the carpentry program. Construct, install, or repair structures, fixtures, and building frameworks using carpentry hand and power tools. You’ll learn to build wood framing for houses, roofs, stairs, decks and sheaths, and forms for concrete and frame buildings, walls, footings, columns and stairs. The trade also involves carpentry work to install cabinets, siding, drywall rails, building cabinets and counter tops and may include work on drywall, wood flooring, metal jambs and ceilings. Become skilled in interior and exterior finish work and read blueprints, measure accurately, and calculate dimensions. Apprentices who complete this apprenticeship have the opportunity to transfer course credits towards the Technical Studies – Journey Worker degree.
Oasis Institute of Skills Technologies International students build the framework for a carpentry career. The carpentry program will prepare students for entry into the provincial apprenticeship program, as well as directly into employment. Students will get a thorough introduction to the trade and will learn to work on residential and commercial formwork as well as floor, wall, stair, and roof framing. Theory and shop procedures are set up to simulate job conditions, so punctuality and good work habits are essential. Upon completion of this program, students will receive credit for Level 1.
